Itinerary

Bacalar lagoon

Our first stop is in the so called seven colors lagoon. It is said like this because in its interior there are seven cenotes, that in the moment of being illuminated with sunlight generate different tones from dark blue and turquoise green to transparent.

Bacalar lagoon is 43 kilometers long and 4 kilometers in its widest point. Its real name is Bakhalal and in Mayan means “closer or surrounded by reeds”. This lagoon is shallow, except on the cenotes zone. Normally has a little surge, perfect to swim comfortably.

We’ll travel in this lagoon over a pontoon and watch extraordinary landscapes. We’ll see a lot of birds, we’ll navigate over hidden cenotes and can walk in sandbanks in the middle of the lagoon. An incredible experience.

Bacalar fort

The San Felipe de Bacalar fort is inside of a magic town, a Mexican Government high distinction to small towns that protect and care its ecological and cultural richness. Despite the center of activities is the fort, you can take some minutes to know its main square and streets.

The fort is located just in front of the seven colors lagoon. Its purpose was to defend the population from the English, Dutch and French invasions of XVIII century, who wanted to sack and control the precious woods and dye stick trade. The fortress can be perambulated, and from the top, you can take precious pictures and views of the lagoon.

Also, inside there is a magnificent museum with a collection that narrates the zone historical development with documents, maps, drawings and models. In this collection there are Mayan and colonial archaeological ruins, but mainly you can appreciate a beautiful set of scale boats from the pirates era. Also you can’t miss the grandiose mural with the region historical narrative.

Bacalar Azul cenote

Few minutes far from the fort there is our last stop: an open cenote with sweet and transparent water. Its name is Azul cenote, because its color indicates the abyss is under us when we swim in it. Is 100 meters depth with 200 meters diameter, surrounded by the jungle and is almost part of the lagoon if not for a little ground stripe that pulls them apart.

There you can swim and snorkeling accompanied by beautiful fishes of different sizes and colors. We recommend you to swim at the center of the cenote, because you’ll feel a very special sensation.

The tour ends eating at the restaurant of the same place, that has a precious view of the cenote. After that we’ll take you back to your hotel.
